Head Lice Treatment

How can I treat a head lice infestation?

The most important step in treating a head lice infestation is to treat the person and other family members with head lice with Nit Free Lice Removal Treatment Shampoo to kill the lice. Wash clothing and bedding worn or used by the infested person in the 2-day period just before treatment is started.

Do Not Panic More than 12 Million people (mostly children) get head lice each year. They are spread by using the same comb, wearing others hats or caps, or simply by bumping into someone while standing in line.  They are not a Health Risk. They do require a complete step-by-step process to eliminate the lice and nits (eggs).

Identifying Head Lice: First, your child’s head will start to itch or a rash may form. Look very closely and you may see the lice. They are often worse behind the ears or back of the neck. There are (3) forms of head lice. Louse is the term to describe an adult. They grow to the size of a sesame seed and tan-to-grayish in color. They live for about (3) weeks. During this time the female will lay between 100 and 200 eggs. Nit is the term used for the louse egg. They are oval and yellow-to-white. Nymph is the term used for the hatched louse. The females will start to hatch 100 to 200 nits in only (7) days. This creates a lice cycle, which needs to be properly treated.

Treatment for Head Lice: A complete step-by-step process is required to eliminate the lice and nits.

1. Use a Non-Toxic Shampoo to eliminate the Head Lice or Louse. Pesticide shampoos are not completely safe and require a (2) week waiting period to re-apply. NIT FREE is 100% safe and can be applied daily.

2. Be certain all the Nits are gone. If not the Lice Cycle will start again. NeonNits is the only Non-Toxic spray that illuminates the nits so you can see, identify, and remove them.

3. Use a fine-toothed comb to get the lice and nits. The Nit Free TERMINATOR COMB is the best on the market. It’s unique design with Microgrooved long teeth drags lice and nits out and destroys them.

Manual removal is the necessary component for head lice treatment. You cannot control head lice with shampoo alone. Shampoo treatments should be combined with manual removal. You must also remove all of the nits before they hatch. Nits cling to your hair close to the scalp. Nitpicking is not fun. They are very hard to see.

Neon Nits Instructions: Neon Nits® spray is easy to use! Just shake well, and follow the directions below! One note, do not attempt to use on recently dyed, permed, or treated hair, or on an irritated scalp.
Before use, carefully read directions and warnings on back of can. As with all products,
Neon Nits® spray must be used in accordance with label instructions. SPRAY LIGHTLY!

 1. Hold 8" to 12" from dry hair. Direct short spray bursts close to scalp, especially at nape of neck, and along crown part line. AVOID OVERSPRAYING AND SATURATION........Spray lightly, overspraying wastes Neon Nits®  and causes it to be harder to remove.

2. Brush out after drying. Excess color will come off hair, but not eggs. Any color on skin can be washed off with soap and water.

3. Check hair closely for colored head lice eggs.

4. Remove remaining eggs with nit removal comb.

After removing eggs, shampoo hair with normal hair shampoo to remove color residue.

    * NOTE: AVOID USING OIL-BASED PRODUCTS SUCH AS MAYONNAISE, VASOLINE, CRUDE OIL, etc... If you do, you'll have a big gooey pink mess!

*After treatment, check hair and comb with a nit comb to remove dead nits and lice every 2-3 days. Continue to check for 2-3 weeks until you are sure all lice and nits are gone.

Treat the household: Head lice do not survive long if they fall off a person and cannot feed. You don't need to spend a lot of time or money on housecleaning activities. Follow these steps to help avoid re-infestation by lice that have recently fallen off the hair or crawled onto clothing or furniture.

  1. To kill lice and nits, machine wash all washable clothing and bed linens that the infested person wore or used during the 2 days before treatment. Use the hot water (130°F) cycle. Dry laundry using high heat for at least 20 minutes.

  2. Dry clean clothing that is not washable, (coats, hats, scarves, etc.).

    OR

Store all clothing, stuffed animals, comforters, etc., that cannot be washed or dry cleaned into a plastic bag; seal for 2 weeks.

  3. Soak combs and brushes for 1 hour in ELF for Bed Bugs, or wash with soap and hot (130°F) water.

  4. Vacuum the floor and furniture. The risk of getting re-infested from a louse that has fallen onto a carpet or sofa is very small. Don't spend a lot of time on this. Just vacuum the places where the infested person usually sits or lays. Do not use fumigant sprays; they can be toxic if inhaled or absorbed through the skin.

Prevent Reinfestation: Lice are most commonly spread directly by head-to-head contact and much less frequently by lice that have crawled onto clothing or belongings. As a short-term measure to control a head lice outbreak in a community, school, or camp, you can teach children to avoid playtime and other activities that are likely to spread lice.

  • Avoid head-to-head contact common during play at school and at home (sports activities, on a playground, slumber parties, at camp).
  • Do not share clothing, such as hats, scarves, coats, sports uniforms, or hair ribbons.
  • Do not share infested combs, brushes, or towels.
  • Do not lie on beds, couches, pillows, carpets, or stuffed animals that have recently been in contact with an infested person.
